The UK government has initiated a significant reform of its defence procurement system by creating the position of National Armaments Director (NAD). This role aims to address inefficiencies and ensure the armed forces are adequately equipped to meet current global threats.
The NAD will be responsible for delivering necessary military capabilities, shaping and implementing the Defence Industrial Strategy, ensuring a resilient supply chain, leading defence exports and acquisition reforms, and harmonising procurement efforts across government, industry, academia, and international partners.
To attract top-tier talent, the government is offering a competitive remuneration package. The salary for the NAD position is up to £400,000, with an annual bonus of up to 60%, bringing the total potential package to £640,000.
Recruitment for the NAD is ongoing, with the selection process expected to conclude by June. In the interim, Andy Start, the current head of Defence Equipment & Support, is serving as the acting NAD.
This initiative is part of broader defence reforms, including the establishment of a Military Strategic Headquarters, to enhance the UK’s military readiness and response capabilities.
