The techUK Defence Programme has published a report outlining how Defence Technologies (DefTech) will transform UK defence capabilities, emphasizing the need for a shift in government thinking about procurement and capability development. Key highlights include:
•Focus on Capabilities, Not GDP: Defence spending should prioritize specific capabilities rather than arbitrary percentages of GDP.
•Problem-Centric Procurement: The Ministry of Defence (MOD) should define operational problems and allow industry to propose innovative solutions.
•Bridging the Gap: Enhance collaboration between innovators and end-users by involving service personnel in problem definition and embedding technologists in tactical roles to identify effective applications for new technologies.
The report features case studies from techUK members, including 2iC, GemaSecure, and Arondite, showcasing innovation in the DefTech sector. It also notes lessons from the Ukraine conflict, highlighting the importance of rapidly integrating advanced technologies alongside conventional forces.
The UK’s success in future conflicts will rely on a dynamic DefTech sector that supports MOD innovation and learns from transformative approaches in other industries. TechUK’s defence programme facilitates alignment between the MOD and the defence tech sector through activities like private briefings and market engagement.
